Characters

Squall Leonheart
Birthdate: August 23
Age: 17
Height: 177 cm (5'8)
Blood type: AB
Weapon: Gunblade

Squall, though an expressionless and detached teenager, is an extremely gifted student who studies in the military and academic areas of Balamb Garden. He aims to be part of the elite SeeD forces.
Squall starts the game as an introverted, moody, angsty teenager who refuses to let anyone form a bond with him due to past abandonment, but learns to trust people throughout the course of the game. Though withdrawn, Squall does not shrink from what he considers his duty. Much as he resents assuming leadership, he is the first to ensure that what is necessary gets done. Squall's clear mind and sense of responsibility lead others to trust and follow him. He is quite popular at Balamb Garden and although everybody agrees on how difficult Squall can be, staff and students admire and like him.
Squall is most often seen wearing a distinctive black leather jacket with fur trim on the collar, and wields a gunblade. During one of his training sessions, in a duel with Seifer Almasy, Squall received his trademark facial scar. He immediately returned the favor by leaving a similar injury to his long-time rival.
Another trademark of Squall is a phrase that he utters quite a lot during the course of the game. The phrase being "Whatever...", said in a dismissing demeanor.

Seifer Almasy
Birthdate: December 22
Age: 18 Height: 188 cm (6'2)
Blood type: O
Weapon: Gunblade

Seifer is a serious, grim, emotionless man involved in a deep rivalry with Squall. He tries to prove his superiority whenever possible. Both men have a scar on their foreheads from a training session duel when Seifer pulled the trigger on the Gunblade and Squall, reacting in shock, pulled at the same time.

Seifer has short blond hair, blue-green eyes, and a scar across his forehead and nose received from Squall Leonhart, the protagonist of the game, during a duel. Seifer wears a white coat with an emblem resembling the symbol of the Knights Templar on the back, as well as black gloves and boots. Aside from Squall, Seifer is the only other student at Balamb Garden to wield a Gunblade. His particular model bears the name Hyperion, and utilizes a pistol integrated into the handle rather than Squall's revolver handles. The Hyperion is decidedly lighter than Squall's Revolver, as Seifer holds it with one hand.

Seifer has great skills in battle, but his stubborn, arrogant, reckless and unpredictable nature has kept him from completing the SeeD exam multiple times. At the beginning of the game, he once again fails the SeeD field exam after his impatient behavior makes him disobey direct orders during the attack on Dollet. The other members in his Squad, Squall and Zell, pass.

There are many parallels between Seifer and Squall. Even though they are rivals, always battling to prove each one's superiority, they have an unspoken mutual respect for each other's prowess in battle. As aforementioned, both Seifer and Squall have a scar in their faces inflicted during their duel in the opening sequence. The scars are mirror images of each other, with Seifer's pointing upright while Squall's points upleft. Seifer is stubborn, arrogant, loud and outspoken, while Squall is a silent strict follower of duty. Both men are nigh-equally skilled in the ways of the Gunblade; however, his temper and impatience often leaves him losing to Squall. Seifer's Triple Triad card is also a mirror of Squall's, both having the same numbers, only mirrored.

Despite his reckless and arrogant nature, Seifer is the head of Balamb Garden's Disciplinary Committee. The other committee members are Fujin and Raijin. Both Fujin and Raijin are extremely loyal to Seifer, and consider themselves a "posse." Other members of Balamb Garden consider them a "gang" more interested in exercising their "disciplinary" powers than actually keeping students in line. When Seifer joins the Sorceress' side, Fujin and Raijin join the Galbadian Army, and helps their friend find a girl called Ellone. Nearing the end of the game, witnessing how Seifer has changed, Fujin begs, in a normal manner of speech, Seifer to stop his wicked plans.
Rinoa Heartilly
Birthday: March 3
Age: 17
Height: 163 cm (5'4)
Blood type: Unknown
Weapon: Blaster edge

Rinoa is a free-spirited, emphatic young woman. She is believed to be a candidate for SeeD. She is credited for helping Squall get in touch with his feelings.
Rinoa Heartilly (possibly born Rinoa Caraway) is the daughter of General Caraway of the Galbadian Army, and Julia Heartilly, a famous singer. When Rinoa was five, Julia died in a car accident, and her relationship with her father was rocky. She eventually left home and joined an anti-Galbadian resistance group in Timber called the Forest Owls.

Rinoa first meets Squall Leonhart at the SeeD celebration ball, where she convinces him to dance with her. Her purpose for being at the ball was to convince Cid Kramer to let her hire a small group of SeeDs to help her group liberate Timber from Galbadian occupation. The three chosen were Squall, Zell Dincht, and Selphie Tilmitt, and according to the contract between Cid and Rinoa, they were to be bound to the Forest Owls until they liberated Timber. Because of this, Rinoa joined the party, along with her faithful dog Angelo.

Rinoa's personality is everything that Squall's is not: feisty, compassionate, warm and friendly, and these traits annoy Squall to no end at first. However, opposites attract, and through the course of the game, they fall in love.

After an attack on Edea at Galbadia Garden, Rinoa received Edea's powers and became a sorceress. Ultimecia possessed Rinoa and made her open the seal to Adel's tomb for the express purpose of possessing her. After the seal was broken, Ultimecia left Rinoa for dead in space, but Squall rescued her.

Edea
Birthday: Unknown
Age: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Blood type: Unknown
Weapon: Magic

Unmistakably evil, Edea is the villain of the story. Very little is known about her. Although she seems to hail from a powerful caln of witches and appears in a witch parade during the game.
When she was five years old, Edea received the Power of a dying Sorceress, and eventually took on Cid as her Knight. They started an orphanage on the Centra continent, with the orphans referring to her as "Matron."

Years later, as Ultimecia had warped to the past and lay dying, Edea received Ultimecia's powers, as she did not want any of the orphans to take them. After a short talk with the Squall Leonhart from the future, she and Cid began making plans to contain or eliminate her if and when she went bad. These plans resulted in the creation of SeeD and the Gardens.

Later on, after Ellone was being sought by Dr. Odine to complete his research on her, Edea created the White SeeD, a group of older orphans assigned to protect Ellone.

Zell Dincht
Birthday: March 17
Age: 17
Height: 168 cm (5'5)
Blood type: B
Weapon: Gloves

Zell has spiky blond hair, blue eyes, and the complete opposite of Squall personality-wise: energetic, loud, and overconfident in his own abilities. It's these characteristics that provide most of the game's comic relief, with the other characters mocking Zell's strength and abilities. He is sort of an easy target, with his mouth going faster than his brain.
Zell likes the hot dogs, or bread in the Japanese version, from Balamb Garden's cafeteria, but in more comic relief, there are never any left by the time he shows up. He does get a hold of a lot at the end of the game, however, where he chokes on them for even more comic relief. Zell wears a black vest, blue shorts, and has a large tattoo on the left side of his face.

Selphie Tilmitt
Birthday: July 16
Age: 17
Height: 157 (5'2)
Blood type: B
Weapon: Nunchaku

Selphie is a childish, hyperactive sort, who is always looking to have some fun. However, she is not stupid, and has a flair for electronics, with her running her own website, being the head of the Garden Festival Committee, disarming missiles and piloting an airship during the course of the game. She often says a lot of cutesy things and tries to bring Squall out of his shell, much to his chagrin.

Selphie most often wears a short yellow jumper, and is lethal with nunchaku.

Irivine Kinneas
Birthday: November 24
Age: 17
Height: 185 cm (6'0)
Blood type: A
Weapon: Shotgun

Irvine is a ladies' man, plain and simple, and uses his loner sharpshooter persona to try and impress them. He's not shallow, however; inside Irvine is actually a sensitive person with a sharp mind. During the course of the game he focuses his charms on Selphie, but whether they actually get together is up for debate. For a number of reasons, the foremost being that he is the only Garden student in the party that has not yet reached SeeD status and is the only one to remember the party's shared past in the orphanage, due to him not using Guardian Forces, Irvine is the odd man out.

Irvine wears his auburn hair in a ponytail with a black cowboy hat over it, a purple shirt, and a khaki colored long jacket. He joins the party near the end of Disk One, and is also the last permanent member to join.

Quistis Trepe
Birthday: October 4
Age: 18
Height: 172 cm (5'6)
Blood type: A
Weapon: Chain whip

Quistis is known as a child prodigy around Balamb Garden. At 15, she became a SeeD, while at 18, she is the youngest instructor in the Garden and even has her own fan club. However, because she is so young, she is more lax and not as strict as the other instructors, and this causes problems with some of her students not taking her as seriously as they should. Quistis is of a friendly disposition and always tries to maintain her calm. Due to her quiet assertiveness and restraint, very few people take the trouble to view her as the young woman she still is and so, forced to mull over her thoughts and worries alone, kept at a distance from her pupils by her rank, Quistis tends to brood a lot. It becomes apparant that she would love to develop a more personal relationship with the people around her, particularly with Squall. Yet she is hesitant to make a bold move and maintains her role instead. As a result, she gets moody and even depressed from time to time. Considering her history at Balamb Garden, it is hardly surprising that she regards the school as home. She is fiercely protective oabout the Garden and all that SeeD stands for.

Quistis wears a pink zippered vest that extends to just above her hips, it also features a high colar. The lower half of the vest is worn open, revealing the midrift. Over her arms she has dark brown arm warmers with brown gloves. A long pink skirt that has pockets with a silver waistband with black pants, a brown belt and black shoes. She has her blond hair tied up at the back, held with a silver comb accessory, but keeps her fringe free to hang down either side of her face. As an instructor in Balamb Garden she wears her SeeD uniform and also wears a pair of silver rimmed glasses.
